Collection: ODISSI DANCE JEWELRY

Odissi jewelry sets, traditionally known as Alankara, are distinctive for their exclusive use of fine silver or silver-plated metal or silver filigree, an ancient art form known as Tarakasi that originated in Cuttack, Odisha. Unlike many other Indian classical dances that use gold temple jewelry, Odissi is unique for its use of silver ornaments, which are essential to the dancer's Aharya (costume and adornment).

Essential Components of a Full Set

A professional Odissi jewelry set typically includes about 10 essential pieces:

  • Headpiece (Tahia/Crown): A distinctive crown worn around the hair bun that often resembles a temple spire.
  • Forehead Jewelry: Includes the Mathapatti (worn along the hairline) and Alaka or Tikka (central forehead piece).
  • Necklaces: Dancers wear two sets—a Chika (short choker) and a Haara or Lambaharam (long necklace with a pendant that ends near the waist).
  • Earrings (Kapa/Kaan): Ornate earrings that often cover the entire ear and typically feature peacock patterns.
  • Waist Belt (Bengapatia): An elaborate, often three-tiered silver belt that is a signature of the dance form.
  • Armlets & Bangles: Includes Bajuband (armlets worn on the upper arm) and Kankanas (broad bangles covering the wrist).
